Mongolia visa and entry requirements

Mongolia's e-visa covers tourism for the nationalities listed in the evisa.mn nationality dropdown: one entry, up to 30 days, with no extension possible. Many European, North American and Oceanian passports do not need it at all.

The e-visa is issued by the Immigration Agency of Mongolia through evisa.mn. The application has four parts: document type and nationality (where you choose the category, K2 for tourism), personal information, purpose and duration, then data confirmation before card payment. The approved e-visa arrives by email as a PDF; at the border it is scanned with your passport and your fingerprints and photo are taken. Other e-visa categories exist for sports, cultural events and filming (K4, 30 days) and for transit (K6, 10 days). Only nationalities that appear in the portal's nationality list can apply; others are either visa-free or must use an embassy.

Entry rules at the border

Passport
6 months beyond arrivalValid at least 6 months beyond your arrival date in Mongolia; the portal checks the expiry date at the application stage.
Blank pages
No official number is published. Keep a blank page for the entry and exit stamps.
Onward ticket
May be askedNot a mandatory upload, but an onward or return ticket can be requested on the form or by the border officer.
Vaccinations
No vaccination requiredNo vaccination certificate is required for entry, including yellow fever.
Insurance
RecommendedNot required. Medical and evacuation cover is recommended: distances outside Ulaanbaatar are long and care in the countryside is basic.
Ports of entry
Most travellers arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport near Ulaanbaatar. Only a few land crossings are open to foreigners, the best known being Zamyn-Üüd (road and rail from China) and Altanbulag (road from Russia); confirm your crossing before travelling overland.

Also good to know

  • Fingerprints and a photo are taken at the border when the e-visa is scanned.
  • Your hotel, host or tour operator must register you online with the Immigration Agency within 48 hours of arrival. If you stay with friends or travel independently, make sure you are registered yourself; this can be done online.

Why applications get refused — and what we check

Wrong visa category

The 'Applying for' field on Part 1 sets the category. Choosing tourism (K2) for a film shoot, a sports competition or a festival performance, which belong under K4, or for a short transit that fits K6, can lead to refusal or to questions at the border.

What we checkWe match the purpose of your trip to K2, K4 or K6 before Part 1 is submitted and keep the purpose text consistent with that choice.

Passport too close to expiry

Mongolia requires at least 6 months of passport validity beyond arrival. A file submitted with a passport that falls short of this on the planned entry date is refused.

What we checkWe calculate the passport's remaining validity against your planned date of entry, not the application date, and advise renewing first when it falls short.

Unusable photo or data-page scan

The portal requires a scan of the passport's first page and a recent colour photo. A blurred or cropped data page, glare across the machine-readable zone or a photo in which the face is not clearly visible can lead to rejection.

What we checkWe check that the scan shows the whole data page without glare and that the photo meets the background and proportion rules before upload.

Accommodation details missing or inconsistent

The form asks where you will stay in Mongolia, down to the district and sub-district. A blank or vague answer, or a tour that starts after the declared entry date, undermines the application.

What we checkWe enter the first night's hotel or the tour operator's details exactly as on the booking and check that the dates fit the declared entry and departure.

What if…

Real situations our agents handle, and what to do.

My nationality is not in the portal's dropdown.
Then the e-visa is not available to you. Check the 'Visa free countries' list on evisa.mn; if you are not on it either, apply for a visa at a Mongolian embassy or consulate.
I am arriving on the Trans-Mongolian train from Beijing.
Zamyn-Üüd is where the train crosses from China, so use it wherever the form asks for your point of entry. Confirm with the Mongolian embassy that the crossing processes e-visa holders on your travel date.
I want to visit Russia or China and come back to Mongolia.
The tourist e-visa allows a single entry. Leaving Mongolia ends it, so you need a new e-visa, or a visa from an embassy, before re-entering.
I am European and travelling in 2027.
The temporary exemption for 34 countries, which covers most European passports, ends on 31 December 2026, and no extension had been announced as of October 2026. Check with the Immigration Agency or a Mongolian embassy before booking; if it lapses, you will need a visa, through evisa.mn if your nationality is added to the portal or otherwise from an embassy.
I am only passing through Mongolia on the way to another country.
If your nationality needs a visa and you leave the airport or cross Mongolia overland, apply for the K6 transit e-visa, which allows up to 10 days.

Questions travellers ask

Do I need the Mongolia e-visa?
Only if your nationality appears in the evisa.mn nationality dropdown; Mongolian consulates still cite 98 countries, but the dropdown now lists more. Nationals on the 'Visa free countries' list enter without it, and other nationalities must apply at an embassy.
How much does it cost?
Several embassies report a USD 30 government fee for the tourist e-visa, but amounts quoted elsewhere differ. The exact fee is shown on the payment step, so treat USD 30 as indicative. There is no express option.
How long does processing take?
Mongolian embassies indicate 48 to 72 hours. Apply at least 3 working days before departure; the portal does not offer faster processing.
When must I travel once the e-visa is issued?
The e-visa allows one entry and a stay of up to 30 days from entry. The last date by which you must enter is shown on the e-visa itself; agencies commonly report 150 days from issue, but Mongolian official pages do not state it, so check your document.
What is the difference between K2, K4 and K6?
K2 is tourism, up to 30 days. K4 covers sports, cultural and arts events and film or content creation, also up to 30 days. K6 is transit, up to 10 days. Choose the category that matches what you will actually do.
Can I stay longer than 30 days?
Not on the e-visa: the evisa.mn terms state that it cannot be extended or converted into another visa. For a trip longer than 30 days, apply for a visa at a Mongolian embassy before you leave.
Do I have to print the e-visa?
No. Mongolian embassies ask you to carry a digital or printed copy of the e-visa for the airline and the border officers, and the evisa.mn terms ask you to keep a copy with you throughout your stay. A printout is a useful backup at check-in or on a train crossing.
What happens at the border?
The officer scans the e-visa and takes your fingerprints and photo before stamping the passport. Make sure you get the entry stamp: the UK government warns that a missing stamp can cause problems when you leave.
Can I cross a land border with the e-visa?
Only a few land crossings are open to foreigners, mainly Zamyn-Üüd on the China border and Altanbulag on the Russia border. Check that your crossing is open and handles foreign travellers on your date before relying on it.
Do I need to register with the police on arrival?
Not at a police station. Your hotel, host or tour operator must register you online with the Immigration Agency within 48 hours of arrival. If you stay with friends or travel independently, make sure you are registered yourself, which can be done online; the evisa.mn terms also mention registration with the Agency within 7 working days of arrival.
Does each family member need an e-visa?
Yes. Each traveller, including children, files a separate application with their own passport, photo and email-delivered e-visa. Children are subject to the same 6-month passport validity rule.
